PREVENTION OF INTERNET ADDICTION: Presentation of the Project “Prevention, Education and Socialization” in the City Municipality of Stari Grad – Lifestyle

Belgrade, October 10, 2024.

– The “PES – Prevention, Education and Socialization” project, which deals with the topic of Internet addiction prevention among students of upper grades of primary and secondary schools, was presented today to the principals of Stari Grad primary and secondary schools, representatives of the student parliament and the Council of Parents in the City Municipality of Stari Grad.

The initiative to implement this project was taken by the Association of Organizers of Games of Chance AGOS, and support for the implementation came from both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia. The project covers the growing problems caused by Internet addiction among adolescents, and the goal is to provide these young individuals with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to prevent and combat this problem.

In the introductory part of the presentation, our prominent athlete and national team player Dragan Škrbić, ambassador of the “Prevention, Education and Socialization” Project addressed the audience, and after that, the lecture was given by Sara Gašić, graduate psychologist and family system counselor.

On this occasion, Dragan Škrbić emphasized the importance of cooperation with the city municipalities and expressed his gratitude to the City Municipality of Stari Grad for the space provided for the presentation and contacts with the directors of school institutions. “I would like to thank the City Municipality of Stari Grad for recognizing the importance of this topic and our Project and inviting principals of primary and secondary schools, representatives of the student parliament and parents to familiarize themselves with our work and plans. We consider such events to be effective because we gather several significant representatives of schools in one place and we can talk together and exchange experiences, as well as plan further activities.”

Nedeljko Jovanović, member of the council of the City Municipality of Stari Grad for sports, thanked the representatives of the Association “PES” for spreading awareness about this problem and for their efforts to educate and inform young people, their parents and teachers about the ways to use the Internet properly and prevent addiction.

The presentation of the project as well as workshops with students and parents have so far been held in two Belgrade schools – Sports Gymnasium “Sportium” and school “Ruđer Bošković”. The project’s activities continue intensively in the new school year, and workshops are planned not only in schools, but also for the younger categories of sports clubs.

The topics covered in the project are the reality of the digital world, possible harmful content and potential risks for children’s mental health, the influence of parents and the community on children’s Internet use, as well as the presentation of tools that can help prevent online addiction.

The implementation of the Project is planned for the next four years, so that the psychologist of the PES Association will hold a series of workshops in primary and secondary schools specially adapted for female students, and especially for their parents. The goal is to build a partnership with schools, teachers, parents and the public during this period so that we can talk about the problems together and prevent the emergence of online addiction.
