At 18 euros per month, Viaplay has been the most expensive sports subscription in the Netherlands for quite some time, but after a new price increase, the Ziggo Sport Totaal package at KPN will become just as expensive.
Many things will become more expensive again this year and watching sports on TV is certainly one of them. In a few weeks, KPN will increase the subscription price of the Ziggo Sport Totaal subscription for the second time in a few months. That is the package with which you can watch all matches from the UEFA competitions, for example. In September the monthly price already increased from 14.99 euros to 16.99 euros and now says KPN that the package will cost 17.99 euros per month from February 13. That is the same monthly price as Viaplay currently charges Dutch people.
Ziggo Sport Totaal broadcasts football from the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish La Liga and the Italian Serie A on six channels. Ziggo Sport also offers MotoGP, tennis, golf and many other sports. Other providers may soon follow KPN’s example.
Why are there such price differences?
It is striking that providers charge different prices for the Ziggo Sport Totaal package. Ziggo, for example, charges 14.99 euros per month, three euros cheaper than KPN. These price differences are because Ziggo has increased the purchasing price it charges to providers after it obtained the exclusive rights to the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
All matches of the Dutch clubs in these UEFA competitions and the finals are available to everyone for free via Ziggo Sport Free. You do need the Ziggo GO app for this.
Will Viaplay become more expensive again?
In the game surrounding broadcasting rights, the Dutch sports viewer is the loser, because he has to dig deeper into his pockets. It is also questionable whether Viaplay will increase its price again soon. That is in line with expectations.
When Viaplay started broadcasting Formula 1 in the Netherlands three years ago, you only paid 14 euros per month. You shouldn’t be surprised if that will soon be 20 euros per month. The Swedish company has the Dutch broadcasting rights of Formula 1 until 2029. From this year onwards, you will no longer see summaries of the F1 races on NOS and Ziggo. Dutch people can still subscribe to F1 TV Pro, Formula 1’s own streaming service.
