There will be no aid for public transport or free Renfe passes this 2025. This was announced by Transport Minister Óscar Puente last October. The end of the subsidies raises a question mark about the rates, which could increase considerably without the 30% bonus provided by the State and the 20% provided by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM).
It will be mid-December when the ATM will decide on the new ticket prices in Catalonia. Without the discounts agreed by the State – implemented in September 2022 to deal with the energy crisis –, transport tickets could become worth twice what they cost now. It will also be necessary to see by what percentage the rates will increase, since at the end of the bonuses the price set by the ATM is also added. Last year (subsidies aside) tickets went up by 6.75%: the T-Casual went from 11.35 euros to 12.15 euros and the T-Usual from 20 euros to 21.35 euros .
As for Rodalies, without the free quarterly passes, it is understood that tickets will return to regular prices, if Renfe does not announce any changes. So, a 10-trip pass in a zone would be worth 10.25 euros and would increase depending on the distance up to a maximum of 47.75 euros for the pass that reaches zone 6. These 10-trip tickets were not on sale this 2024, and it is still to be determined if they will be worth the same.
Despite the end of the subsidies, Óscar Puente remarked that discounts on public transport would continue for frequent users and the young population, while free tickets would remain for the most vulnerable groups. We will have to wait until December to find out how much it will cost us to use the metro, tram, train or bus. And in fact, public transport will not be the only one to become more expensive: the Barcelona taxi will rise by 4.7% before the end of 2024.
