Britain’s Prince William said that the past year was probably the hardest in his life. Doctors diagnosed his father, King Charles III, as well as his wife Kate with cancer. He spoke to journalists at the end of his visit to South Africa about how he coped with this situation.
“Honestly? It’s been terrible. It’s probably the hardest year of my life. So trying to manage everything else and keep everything going has been really hard,” the BBC quoted the heir to the British throne as saying.
Buckingham Palace announced in February that the king has cancer and will be receiving treatment. Just six weeks later, the public learned that Princess Kate was also undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.
Charles III has already returned to his official duties, and Kate announced in September that she had finished chemotherapy. She made her first public appearance since completing that treatment last month when she and William met in Southport with the families of the three children who died there in a knife attack in July. This coming weekend, the King, William and Kate will attend commemorations to mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War.
William told reporters that he was “proud” of his wife and father for how they handled everything. “But from a personal perspective, it’s really brutal,” he admitted.
William was in South Africa without Kate, who is still recovering from treatment. On Wednesday, he said she was doing very well.
The prince believes that he has succeeded in balancing the role of future king, husband and father. “I like my job, I like to schedule it and I make sure I have time for my family,” said William.
