Principles of proper smartphone use in the summer. What about water resistance and high temperatures?

The summer months are getting hotter every year, and not only people and animals have a problem, but also technology. Electronics do not do well at high temperatures, and if they are not certified for this, they also suffer. Unreasonably high temperatures can damage the internal components and even disable the device.

Perhaps you too have already encountered the information on the display about the high temperature of the phone. Some even turn themselves off or have slow reactions. This year’s July temperatures will probably be among the highest in history, and we won’t see a significant, long-term cooling even in the coming weeks. After all, it’s summer. So how do you protect your phone from heat damage? And can you submerge it in water or cool it in the fridge?

The battery suffers especially in the summer

To prevent damage to the mobile device, we should follow some principles. The most sensitive component to heat is the battery. She does not like not only low, but also high temperatures. They are usually set up to work between approx -5 °C  do + 55 °C. These numbers may differ for specific manufacturers. But we are not interested in specific numbers, none of us will measure the temperature of the battery.

1. Do not leave your smartphone in the sun

It may show 30 degrees in the shade, but it is usually much more in the sun. If the phone reaches such a temperature that it burns your hand, it is already a critical value. The problem is that the damage to the components caused by exposing the smartphone to high temperature may not appear immediately, but only after some time.

Later, you may wonder why the battery suddenly doesn’t last as long and you have to charge more often. The first aid in cases where the phone is unreasonably warm is to leave it in a place where it is more comfortable. We do not recommend its immediate use, which can lead to even greater overheating.

2. Don’t leave your phone in the car

Leaving the phone in a closed car or putting it on the dashboard while driving is also a problem. Even if the car is cooled by air conditioning, direct sunlight through the glass can raise the temperature of the device to considerable heights. It may also be inappropriate to place the phone in the holder and start the navigation at the same time.

If you don’t have the opportunity to blow cool air from the fan grill onto your mobile phone, try to find another place where the sun won’t shine on it while you’re driving. The advantage is support for Android Auto or CarPlay.

3. Think carefully about where you put it

The phone is not only damaged by direct sunlight, but also by high temperatures. If you keep it in a backpack or purse made of dark materials and in a hot environment, that’s not good either. If you don’t happen to take your phone with you, make sure it’s left in a suitable place where it won’t get very hot during the day. Even at home, the sun can shine on it during the day.

4. Do not use it when it is very warm

If the mobile phone is warmer than it should be, we definitely do not recommend playing a graphically demanding game or doing other tasks with it that require higher processor performance. This also applies to video recording, especially in 4K and higher resolution. It’s better to wait a while, reply to the messages a little later. You don’t have to respond immediately when someone writes to you.

5. Do not expose it to sudden changes in temperature

Be sure not to try to cool the phone by placing it in the refrigerator or immersing it in cold water, even if it meets the water resistance certification. Too rapid temperature fluctuations are also harmful to him. Sudden changes can have very ugly consequences. Again, it’s the battery that gets the most out of it.

6. If the smartphone is hot, do not charge it

Even during normal charging, but especially when using a fast charger, the phone heats up to a higher than standard temperature. The device is ready for this, but you could damage it if you start charging it when it’s already very hot. There is also a risk of the battery exploding or spreading, but the consequences of such charging can also be felt later, again mainly on battery life.

7. Protective packaging yes and no

The protective cover can accelerate overheating due to poor heat dissipation. If your phone gets too hot, we recommend removing the case and using it without it. To protect the structure in the event of a fall, try to look for the so-called a bumper that protects the corners and side walls, but the back is free.

8. Safety against falling

In the summer, we wear lighter clothes, we go to various festivals, events and the like. It is in these cases that we need to be careful about how we secure our smartphone. The pockets in the shorts may not be big and deep enough. During a sudden movement, for example running on public transport, the device can fall out of our pocket and the problem is in the world.

9. How about water resistance?

Most of the expensive models, but also the cheaper ones, have water resistance certification. But don’t confuse water resistance with water resistance. Water resistance means a guarantee that water will not get into the device only under certain conditions. Today’s smartphones often have waterproof certification (IP67, IP68). This means that they can handle immersion in water for a certain time and to a certain depth. So usually for 30 minutes to a depth of 1 meter (IP67) or 1.5 meters (IP68).

It should be emphasized that the certification applies to still and fresh water. If you expose your smartphone to a strong current or salt water, water can penetrate it under pressure, and even crystals from salt water can cause big problems. If you accidentally “drown” your smartphone like this, you are out of luck. They will find out in the service and will not recognize your claim. Therefore, carefully read what the manufacturer guarantees.

Again, problems that may arise after a bath may not appear immediately. The fact that the device is still working is good news, but in the long run, the moisture seeping in can cause serious problems with the electronics inside.

It is important to protect the smartphone from sand. Mainly its connectors, microphones and the like. If sand gets inside, it can cause significant problems. This also applies to smartphones with dust resistance certification. In addition, sand can also contain various other particles that are harder than the glass on the smartphone and can easily scratch your screen and the like.

We wish you and your mobile to survive the summer heat in good health. It goes without saying that you should always take care of your smartphone, not only in the summer, but throughout the year.
