The new model of the Spanish Cupra entered series production at the Audi factory in Györ, Hungary. Terramar shares the technical platform with the future Audi Q3.
The Spanish manufacturer announces that series production of its new compact SUV has begun. The Cupra Terramar shares the technical platform with both the new Volkswagen Tiguan and the next-generation Audi Q3.
With the help of the new Terramar SUV, Cupra attacks one of the most contested segments today, that of compact SUVs. Thus, the new model will have to face not only domestic competition, but also established models such as Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage or Toyota RAV4.
“With the milestone reached today, the Cupra takes an important step forward in the brand’s journey. With the Cupra Terramar we will not only grow our product portfolio, but at the same time help grow the brand, bringing the Cupra mentality to new customers and new growth segments, without losing our rebellious and challenging spirit,” said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra.
The Cupra Terramar goes into production and is ready to attack the compact SUV segment
The collaboration between the German and Spanish companies dates back to 2011, with the start of production of the Audi Q3 at the Seat factory in Martorell. With nearly 800,000 Q3 units manufactured and approximately 400,000 Audi A1 units produced since 2018, the two companies have experience in this collaboration. Now, with the production of the Cupra Terramar, Györ will become the first Audi plant to produce vehicles from a sister brand.
With more than 12,000 employees and an annual production volume of more than 170,000 vehicles and more than 1,600,000 engines, Györ is the largest engine factory in the world. Manufacturing the CUPRA Terramar in Györ offers several advantages, including the optimization of production processes.
The new SUV measures 4,519 mm in length, 1,863 mm in width, stands 1,584 mm tall and has a long wheelbase of 2,681 mm. Thus, the Terramar is almost identical, if we refer to the external dimensions, with the Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Terramar SUV will be offered exclusively with petrol, mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines. All engines will also be mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
