Kim Hye-kyung, the spouse of Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.

The prosecution had previously requested the same sentence at Mr. Kim’s first trial held on July 25.

The court originally decided to pronounce the verdict on Mr. Kim at 2 p.m. on August 13th, but on August 12th, one day before the sentencing date, the court resumed arguments on its own authority and held two trial preparation dates and three trial dates. Additional hearing was held.

On August 2, 2021, after former leader Lee declared his candidacy for the party’s presidential nomination, Mr. Kim provided a meal worth a total of 104,000 won to three people, including three spouses of former and current Democratic National Assembly members, and his driver and attendant, at a restaurant in Seoul. He was handed over to trial on February 14th of this year on charges of providing (donation).

Mr. Kim’s side has denied the charges, saying, “At the time, the defendant thought that the other guests would have paid their own bills, and the defendant was completely unaware that the meals for the three guests were paid for with a Gyeonggi Province corporate card.”
