Sony has officially announced the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, scheduled for November 7, 2024 at the price of €799 (€950 if you want it complete with disc drive). The new console represents a significant upgrade over the base PS5 model, with a much higher price increase than the previous mid-gen console.
Despite the high cost, analysts at Ampere Analysis predict that PS5 Pro sales will reach similar levels to PS4 Pro. Piers Harding-Rolls, director of gaming research at Ampere, estimates that Sony will sell around 1.3 million PS5 Pros in 2024, up from the 1.7 million PS4 Pros sold at launch in 2016.
The high price reflects Sony’s strategy to protect its margins.
“We expect the price to reduce demand for some consumers, but for PlayStation enthusiasts the cost is less of a factor,” Harding-Rolls said. According to Ampere data, PS4 Pro total sales reached 14.5 million unitsequal to about 12% of total PS4 sales. Analysts expect a similar dynamic for the PS5 Pro, with estimated sales around 13 million units by 2029.
The highest price of the PS5 Pro, again according to Ampere Analysis, reflects several factors, including:
- Sony’s Strategy to Protect Its Profit Margins
- General supply chain inflation
- The absence of a direct competitor in the mid-gen segment, unlike the previous generation when Microsoft released the Xbox One X before the PS4 Pro.
Harding-Rolls points out: “The lack of competition makes it easier for Sony to price it higher to protect its existing margins. For most potential PS5 buyers, The standard edition will still represent the best value for money“.
