A 37-year-old soldier, who sat in an exploded Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas on Wednesday, wanted to give the Americans a “wake-up call”.
This is evident from notes that the police have found on the 37-year-old’s phone.
The American newspaper The New York Times writes that.
– This was not a terrorist attack, he writes and continues:
– It was a wake-up call. After all, Americans only notice sensational incidents and violence. What better way to get attention than to set off fireworks and explosives?
It was in front of one of Donald Trump’s hotels that the 37-year-old special soldier Matthew Livelsberger was behind an explosion in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
A video, which the police subsequently showed, shows charred gas cans and fireworks on the trunk of the badly burned Tesla car.
Livelsberger was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He is believed to have shot himself before the car detonated. This has been reported by the police in Las Vegas.
According to The New York Times, the 37-year-old man was affected by PTSD.
In his notes he writes, among other things:
– Why did I do this right now? I needed to clear my mind of the brothers that I have lost, and I needed to lighten the burden of having taken the lives of others myself, writes Matthew Livelsberger.
It is not clear exactly what he wanted the Americans to realize with the explosion. According to the police, a number of personal problems and societal challenges are described in his notes.
– Some political, some personal, says deputy sheriff of the Las Vegas police Dori Cohen at a press conference according to The New York Times.
He is also said to have written that the United States “was on the way to a collapse”.
Seven were injured in the explosion, but only Livelsberger died.
Although the explosion happened right in front of a Trump hotel, there is nothing to suggest that the man harbored a special animosity towards the future president.
This is according to investigative leader Spencer Evans from the US Federal Police, FBI, on Friday, according to The New York Times.
– Although it is a more public and sensational incident than usual, it ultimately appears to be a tragic suicide by a highly decorated war veteran who suffered from PTSD and other challenges, he says.
PTSD – or post-traumatic stress – is a psychological disorder that can occur if you have experienced something traumatic – for example war.
The FBI has said there is no immediate indication that the explosion was connected to a fatal hit-and-run in New Orleans on Wednesday.
