The desecration of church buildings in Petrinja is an expression of hatred towards Serbs and the cultural and religious heritage of the Serbian people living in Croatia, said the president of the Serbian National Council (SNV) and member of the SDSS in the Croatian Parliament, Milorad Pupovac.

– With such threats and messages of hatred, no one can feel comfortable or safe – said Pupovac.

On the night between September 10 and 11, graffiti with Ustasha symbols appeared on the building of the Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon the Miracle Worker and the Church of St. Nicholas at the Orthodox cemetery in Petrinja.

Pupovac says that in this way a message of hatred was once again sent towards Orthodox believers and Serbs living in Croatia.

– The latest desecration of two churches in the area of Petrinja – the church of Spiridon in the city itself and the church of St. Nicholas in the Orthodox cemetery represents a serious, inhumane desecration of sacred buildings. Harassment, threats and hatred towards Orthodox believers and Serbs living in Croatia. With such threats, with such hateful messages, no one can feel comfortable or safe – said Pupovac in a statement for RTS’s Morning Program.

It indicates that the Serbs in Croatia still have no peace and that there is no other way to explain another provocation in a series, this time on the building of the Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker and the administrative building of the Church Orthodox Municipality of Petrinja, where graffiti with Ustasha symbols appeared.

– There is too much tolerance towards Ustasha symbols, too much tolerance towards messages of hatred towards Serbs. It has become too simple that in the public, political, and cultural life of Serbs in Croatia, they make decisions in which it is easiest to attack the Serbian party, the Serbian representative, something Serbian in order to profit politically – points out Pupovac.

He points out that there is too much turning a blind eye to such phenomena and restraint around clear, unambiguous, harsh condemnation of what must not be tolerated in public life.

– And Ustasha signs, Ustasha symbols, threats towards the remaining Serbs who live in Croatia as peaceful people, as a peaceful community should not be tolerated anywhere, and at least in one member of the European Union to which the Serbs contributed significantly in terms of its membership – he stated. Pupovac.
