Purchasing power, a card to play in attracting talent to the industry

Asked about the levers to improve the image of the industry, its new minister, Marc Ferracci, confided, during a private evening with CEOs of the sector organized by L’Usine Nouvelle: “It’s no longer “Germinal”, we find meaning in our work in industry and these are professions where we earn a good living, often better than in services.» However, the sector has never really played on this rope to attract skills.

Its latest communication campaign emphasizes “meaning” – certainly important – but avoids the subject of remuneration when purchasing power is a major concern of the population. Furthermore, our survey on the French and industry shows that only 15% of them believe that remuneration is better than in other sectors such as services or construction. This subject is one of the worst rated, even behind that of working conditions.

So the fight over the image of “Germinal” is progressing. On the other hand, the idea that one can earn a better living in industry is clearly not accepted. However, according to the latest data from INSEE, in 2022, the average gross monthly salary was 3,890 euros, compared to 3,418 euros in services and 3,065 euros in construction. In net, there is a gap of 300 euros between industry and services.

Other indicators, value sharing also seems more favorable in the industry. The exceptional purchasing power bonus, better known as the “Macron bonus”, has been more widely distributed in the industry. In 2022, 55.8% of energy employees and 67.7% of transport equipment employees have affected it, compared to 29.7% of retail employees and 18.7% of business services employees. Depending on the sector, however, some employees were less well off: in the food industry, only 22% received a Macron bonus. From 1996 to 2022, the average net salary increased by 0.5% per year in constant euros in the private sector, by 0.8% in industry and by only 0.4% in services.

However, the gap between the 10% of those who earn the least and the 10% of those who earn the most is greater in industry than in services. But, still in 2022, the first decile of net salary in industry was at 1,580 euros, while that of services was at 1,430 euros. Know how and make people know.
