Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the general because he falsified reports about the successes of the Russian army on the front in Ukraine. Lieutenant General Gennady Anashkin was the commander of Group South of the Army of the Russian Federation, which is fighting in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian military blog Telegram channel “Military Informant” claims that “false reports of alleged deep successful penetrations” began to come from Siversk, near where troops under the command of Anashkin are deployed.
In the meantime, Telegram channel “Rybar”, which supports the authorities in the Kremlin, stated that this general was directly responsible for the death of hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers, because he sent soldiers ill-equipped for combat to the front line.
The British “Telegraph” reported that the Kremlin and the Russian army have not yet commented on the alleged replacement. State media reported that a Ministry of Defense source confirmed his removal, but claimed it was a “planned rotation”.
Russian bloggers welcomed his removal, arguing that it could lead to improved military operations and put more emphasis on the lives of soldiers. In May, Anashkin was appointed commander of Group South of Russian troops.
For his role in leading aviation units during Russia’s war with Georgia in 2008, he was awarded the country’s highest decoration, the Hero of Russia. His alleged removal comes after a Russian general was reportedly killed by British “Storm Shadow” missiles on November 20.
Lieutenant General Valery Solodchuk was allegedly killed in the Ukrainian attack along with about 500 North Korean soldiers. Also, it was reported that 18 Russian officers were killed in that attack, while as many were wounded.
It was the first time that British Storm Shadow missiles had been used to strike targets deep inside Russia. Missiles hit a command center and a military facility, and the scale of Russian losses is now reportedly estimated to be enormous.
Allegedly, the Russian side launched a hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missile “Oreshnik” on the Dnieper in retaliation for that attack.
