In an analysis of geopolitical developments for The Mirror, international affairs expert Professor Anthony Glees claims that Vladimir Putin is about to implement his own plans for Ukraine, convinced that the deal Donald Trump would strike with Ukraine will not lead to anything concrete. In his opinion, the Russian president knows that Trump’s plan “wouldn’t even be worth the paper it’s written on” and is already preparing for the next stage of the conflict.

According to Professor Glees, Putin is aware that Trump’s modus operandi will not work and will try to take over all of Ukraine and kill its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, the only significant barrier to his expansion.

Recently, Russia approved a new nuclear doctrine, and this can be seen as a sign that Putin is ready to escalate the conflict, anticipating an eventual return to power of Trump. After Biden authorized Ukraine to use US missiles to strike targets in Russia, Putin signed a decree opening the way for the use of nuclear weapons “if the existence of the Russian state is threatened.” Such a move, in addition to acknowledging that Trump may seek to impose a “peace” by ceding territory to Ukraine, could lead, according to Glees’ analysis, to a much wider confrontation.

Killing Zelensky could become a priority for Moscow

The University of Buckingham professor points out that Putin is well informed about American politics and that he knows that any deal Trump tries to negotiate with Russia would only be a temporary solution. Putin “knows this deal wouldn’t even be worth the paper it’s written on,” and after a period of apparent concessions, Russia will try to take over Ukraine entirely. In this context, killing Zelensky could become a priority for Moscow, the expert claims in The Mirror.

According to Glees, the Russian president is doing nothing more than “preparing for war” and signaling an attitude of “cold audacity”, setting the stage for large-scale military action. At the same time, Glees points out that new statements by Trump, including messages from his son, Donald Trump Jr., who claims that the “military-industrial complex” wants to start a world war before his father comes back to power, suggests an ideology of peace in the face of aggression. Trump Jr. said the financial interests of the defense industry could help escalate the conflict, even before Trump had a chance to negotiate peace.

Trump, like Chamberlain, believes he can buy peace

Glees points out that Trump is, in fact, a “pacifist” — a leader who would be willing to make concessions to dictatorships in the hope that they won’t demand more. He compares Trump’s attitude to that of Neville Chamberlain, who believed he could “buy” peace by ceding territories.

The expert also draws attention to a key aspect of Putin’s new nuclear doctrine, which suggests that Russia could respond with nuclear weapons not only to direct aggression, but also to a “threat” from a conventionally armed state , backed by a nuclear power. This point could lead to a nuclear confrontation if Ukraine receives military support from NATO, a scenario already feared by many analysts.

As for the future of the conflict, Professor Glees points out that the weakness of the Western world in the face of Putin’s threats could lead to a situation where Trump, once again in power, will give Putin “what he wants” – Ukraine. “We cannot prevent this,” states Glees, stressing that the only solution to counter these plans would be a significant strengthening of conventional defenses.

These developments, with an increased risk of global conflict, make Western strategy increasingly important. The professor emphasizes the need for a firm reaction, in which NATO states prepare for any eventuality. “We should tell Putin that we will no longer tolerate these threats. If he wants to attack us, let him come. If he attacks us and NATO, we will destroy him,” said the professor.
