Vladimir Putin is ready to discuss the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine Donald Trump’s with, but rules out possible major regional concessions and demands that Kiev abandon its efforts to join NATO, five sources close to the Kremlin said for Reuters.
President-elect Trump – who has promised to end the conflict quickly – will return to the White House in January. Moscow controls a part of Ukraine about the size of the US state of Virginia and is making the fastest advance since the early days of the 2022 invasion.
Five people close to Russia tell what President Putin would accept in an agreement brokered by Trump, which would lead to a freeze on the conflict approved by the Kremlin.
There may be room for negotiation on the exact division of the four eastern regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson, said the three people, who all spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.
Russia open to withdrawal from small areas?
Russia may also be open to withdrawing from the relatively small territories it holds in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions, in northern and southern Ukraine, two of the sources interviewed said.
Putin said this month that any ceasefire deal should reflect the “reality” on the ground, but he feared a short-term truce would only allow the West to rearm Ukraine.
“If there is no neutrality, it is hard to imagine that there would be good neighborly relations between Russia and Ukraine,” Putin said on November 7.
“Why? Because this would mean that Ukraine is constantly being used as an instrument in the wrong hands and at the expense of the interests of the Russian Federation.”
Several sources said that the outgoing president of the United States Joe Biden a decision to allow Ukraine to fire American ATACMS missiles deep into Russia could complicate and delay a solution — and stiffen Moscow’s demands as hardliners demand a larger part of Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Ukraine used American missiles to strike Russian territory for the first time. The Kremlin saw the move as a major escalation.
