Foreign. Russia has successfully tested a new nuclear-capable hypersonic ballistic robot – called the Oreshnik – which President Vladimir Putin says is “unstoppable”. It was this weapon that was used earlier this week in Dnipro, according to the Russians – similar to the effect of a nuclear attack.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that the country is beginning mass production of the new Oreshnik ballistic robotic system, an advanced hypersonic robot developed for high-precision strikes.
– It is not a modernization of an old Soviet robot, but a new development based on hypersonic technology and modern materials, Putin said of Oreshnik during a meeting in the Kremlin with the defense leadership and representatives from the arms industry.
Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia’s strategic robotic forces, described the robot’s effect as “comparable to a nuclear attack”. Putin claims it gives Russia a strategic advantage over NATO.
– No way to stop it exists in the world, said the president.
The announcement from Putin comes after the weapon was used for the first time in combat against a Ukrainian target in Dnipro on Thursday. The attack, which was in response to the White House’s decision to give Ukraine the green light for robotic strikes into Russia, caused a false alarm that an intercontinental ballistic missile had been used.
The Oreshnik is described by the Kremlin as a medium-range weapon with hypersonic capability, specifically designed to evade existing defense systems. The weapon is expected to increase Russia’s strategic capabilities and be placed within the strategic robotic forces in the coming months, according to Russian TASS.
