A high-ranking Russian official, who is said to have had close financial ties to Vladimir Putin, was found dead last night.

The body of Konstantin Zavizenov (50) was found last night by his son in a country house in the Istra district of Moscow, according to the state news agency RIA Novosti.

Law enforcement agencies told the agency that the death was preliminarily being ruled a suicide, but some are questioning that.

“Zavizenov got drunk a week and a half before his death,” writes the pro-Kremlin portal Lenta. The tape states that his son found a note and alcohol on a table in the house, before he heard a shot in another room of the house.

Lenta also announced that Zavizen’s wife recently caught him in an extramarital affair, and that she filed for divorce.

News of his death was shared by Ukrainian-born racing driver and political commentator Igor Susko, who expressed skepticism about claims of Zavizenov’s suicide.

“Konstantin Zavizenov, former Minister of Energy and Coal Industry for the occupied People’s Republic of Luhansk in Ukraine, was killed in Moscow by a gunshot to the head,” Suško wrote on “X”.

According to the Cheka-OGPU Russian Telegram channel – a secret news source for information on Russian political figures – from 2010 to 2016, Zavizenov was director or director of risk management at Inter RAO, an energy holding company based in Moscow.

At the time of Zavizenov’s appointment, the company, one of the largest energy companies in the country, was headed by Boris Kovaljchuk, son of Yuri Kovaljchuk. Kovalchuk is a Russian billionaire, company owner and oligarch, whom Russian journalist Mikhail Zigar, who criticized the Russian president, described as “the defacto second man in Russia.”

Radio Liberty, which is funded by the US government, called him “Putin’s personal banker”.
