Python is at its peak on GitHub

JavaScript is no longer the most used programming language on GitHub, after Python, which has been in second place since 2019, has overtaken Java for the first time. The strengthening of Python also indicates that its use has become more decisive in the open source community beyond traditional software development. Octoverse, a developer platform owned by Microsoft, presents fresh annual trends meaning according to him, the movement is due to the advance of generative artificial intelligence.

This is also supported by the fact that the use of the Jupiter Notebook web application popular among data scientists has increased by 92 percent on the platform since October 2023, which may indicate that more and more people working in the field of machine learning and data science are more and more active on GitHub. There has also been increased interest in AI agents and smaller models on GitHub, which require less computing power. The volume of generative AI projects jumped by 98 percent, with 59 percent more contributions, and a significant number of new contributing developers work in India or Brazil.

The adoption of GitHub Copilot among students and teachers increased by 100 percent, from which it can be concluded that the code supplement AI tool helps more and more users learn to code and speed up development, which is no longer only done by developers in the classical sense, but by also mathematicians, data scientists, teachers and researchers. The rise in popularity of Python on the platform is therefore understandable, highlights the GitHub report.

Overall, a significantly larger number of new users joined the global development community, mainly from Africa, Latin America, India and Asia. The report puts the total number of projects at 518 million, which represents a 25 percent increase compared to the previous year. Contributions to open source or public projects also boomed, largely influenced by GitHub Copilot becoming available in early 2023.
