The Octoverse 2024 report was released on the 29th and is the result of analyzing GitHub data from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024. Contrary to expectations that AI would replace developers, GitHub said, “As AI is spreading rapidly, many developers are integrating AI models into their applications and actively participating in GitHub’s AI projects. “At the same time, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of developers joining GitHub around the world.”
The most active developer communities on GitHub from 2019 to 2024 were the United States, India, China, Brazil, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, and Canada. GitHub said its developer pool is growing rapidly in Africa as well. Additionally, it was found that in 2024, developers around the world made approximately 1 billion contributions to GitHub’s open source and public repositories.
In the security domain in 2024, GitHub developers detected more than 39 million secret leaks through CodeQL secret scanning. The most common security vulnerabilities were injection, access control errors, poor security design, and encryption failure.
