‘Qualcomm is interested in acquiring Intel’

Chip giant Qualcomm has attempted to acquire struggling rival Intel in recent days, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal Friday.

It’s not clear whether Qualcomm wants the entire company, or just parts of it.

Intel is facing stiff competition from the likes of AMD and Nvidia, particularly in the data center and AI markets. As a result, Intel is cutting 15,000 jobs and has scrapped its dividend, citing bleak forecasts.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger recently confirmed that Intel Foundry is being divested, and the company is pausing construction of new chip factories in both Germany and Poland.

Qualcomm, best known as a supplier of chips for smartphones, has a market value of $187 billion, twice as much as Intel’s market value.

The chances of a takeover being approved are slim, however. Even if there are differences, Intel is the main supplier of chip technology for PCs, such a concentration would not be good for competition.
