The flagship chipsets for 2025 have arrived, it’s about the impressive Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and the equally efficient new Dimensity 9400 from MediaTek. Although most phones powered by these chip’s will see the light of day in 2025, we already have the first two phones using the most powerful SoCs – the Realme GT7 Pro with the Snapdragon 8 Elite and the vivo X200 Pro with the Dimensity 9400.
In the past we have seen quite a few times that Qualcomm’s chips outperform MediaTek, but lately the Taiwanese company has made a leap forward in many areas. The latest model in the Dimensity family is equipped with an octa-core CPU unit with 1x 3.63 GHz Cortex-X925 & 3x 3.3 GHz Cortex-X4 & 4x 2.4 GHz Cortex-A720 cores and uses an Immortalis-G925 GPU.
Very different is the whole composition that we find in the SoC Snapdragon 8 Elite, it has Oryon cores – 2x 4.20 GHz Oryon V2 Phoenix L + 6x 3.53 GHz Oryon V2 Phoenix M. These are significantly different CPU clusters compared to Dimensity and are clocked higher. The Adreno 830 GPU is also getting some attention and promises a significant leap over the last generation.
But how tough is the fight between these two chipsets when it comes to their overall performance?
Here are the results from the popular benchmarks to answer any questions:
As expected, the Snapdragon 8 Elite shows higher CPU performance in both heavy single-core and multi-core workloads. In Geekbench 6, the SD8 Elite outperforms the Dimensity 9400 by 10% in the intensive multi-core scenario and by 15% in the single-core scenario.
However, in more complex scenarios with an increased workload and as confirmed by measurements in AnTuTu 10, the Dimensity 9400 looks 6% better than the Qualcomm model. We must point out that we are talking about small imperceptible differences by the end user.
In the final results from 3DMark, the Dimensity 9400 outperforms the SD8 Elite by 7-8%.
It is surprising to see the Immortalis GPU beating the Adreno unit, even by a small margin. Note that these are results from units before they reach their final form on the market, so once we get more phones with these SoCs, we may see a change in the rankings. However, we doubt we will see drastic disparities.
Either way, we see this as a total win because now users can be sure that if they choose a Dimensity 9400 smartphone, they won’t be sacrificing raw performance.
