Rail transport in Latvia decreased by almost a third

The volume of rail freight transport in Latvia this year over ten months decreased by 26.6% compared to the corresponding period in 2023 and amounted to 9.503 million tons, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.

LETA reports that international traffic amounted to 8.012 million tons, a decrease of 30.9% compared to the ten months of last year, while domestic traffic increased by 9.9% to 1.491 million tons.

Information collected by the ministry shows that the volume of transit cargo in the ten months of 2024 amounted to 6.57 million tons, which is 34.8% less than in the last ten months.

Of these, the volume of rail transit of goods through ports for ten months of 2024 amounted to 5.882 million tons, which is 37.1% less than last year for the corresponding period, and land transit through the territory of Latvia – 688 thousand tons, which is 5.9 % less.

Export shipments for the ten months of 2024 amounted to 1.527 million tons, which is half as much as for the corresponding period in 2023, and import shipments amounted to 5.797 million tons, a decrease of 25.6%.

It was previously reported that in 2023, the volume of rail freight traffic in Latvia decreased by 27.6% compared to 2022 and amounted to 15.636 million tons, including the volume of rail freight traffic over the last ten months amounted to 12.95 million tons.
