On Saturday, October 5, a few days before turning a century old – he was born on October 12, 1924 – the legendary composer Mimi Plessaswho with his music defined an entire era, passed away, leaving behind an indelible mark on the Greek musical scene. His life and career were full of successes and moments that highlighted his talent and creativity.

The first international success in cinema

The first big step of Mimi Plessas in international cinema was with the movie “Angry Hills”. Filming took place at the Alfa studios, which he had created in Melissia, studios that remain operational to this day. Despite the film’s success, his co-producers tried to oust him when they realized the financial benefit, as Plessas had contributed mostly with his endless hours of work rather than financial investment. Through this film, the musical motif that later became the song “Sun Gone”, performed by the unforgettable Jenny Vanou, made its first appearance.

Mimis Plessas was willing to give his work to the producer, because the music would have to be written by a foreign composer, a member of the Jewish lobby. Nevertheless, in the end the composition did not change and the film was released as a co-production of England and America, achieving considerable success.

The Hollywood connection

Athens had the honor of hosting the premiere of the expensive Hollywood production “Around the World in 80 Days”. The film’s producer, Michael Todd, along with his gorgeous then-wife, Elizabeth Taylor, attended the glitzy event held in Radio City. Mimis Plessas, as the director of the studios where part of the film was filmed, had taken over the presentation of the evening, impressing the guests both with his impeccable organization and his excellent English.
