Raspberry Pi 5 with Radeon graphics can run modern games in 4K resolution, including Doom Eternal, Forza Horizon 4 or Crysis. However, performance is limited by CPU and RAM.
Enthusiast Jeff Geerling once again pushed the limits of the Raspberry Pi 5 when he demonstrated how this minicomputer can run modern games such as Doom Eternal, Crysis Remastered or Red Dead Redemption 2 in 4K with the help of a powerful Radeon RX 6700 XT GPU. Although this is a remarkable performance, gaming suffers from several limitations, mainly due to the weak processor and only 8 GB of RAM.
Geerling previously showed 4K gaming on a Raspberry Pi 5 with a Radeon RX 460 GPU, where less demanding games like Doom 3 or SuperTuxKart ran stably. Now, thanks to driver support for the newer RX 6000 and RX 7000 series, AAA titles could also be run. Although the RTX effects were functional, the frame rate for games like Doom Eternal remained only at 12 FPS at 4K and RTX. However, when the resolution was reduced to 720p, it performed slightly above 30 FPS, which improved the gameplay.
In addition to gaming, Geerling also tested professional eGPU usage with Radeon Pro W7700 graphics. Although the Pi’s processor and limited bandwidth reduced the build’s performance, it was possible to use the graphics power for things like visualizations or connecting six monitors. Geerling concluded his experiment by noting that the Raspberry Pi combined with an eGPU is a great example of affordable yet powerful technology.
