Nine years after launching the official touchscreen accessory for the popular SBCs, since the British founding announce the launch of the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2. The second generation hits the market at the same price as the original model, but greatly improved in its features.
The Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 maintains the 7 inches diagonal of its predecessor, for an active area of 88 x 155 mm and a native resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels, greatly improved over the original. The panel is capacitive touch with support for five fingers.
The display can be attached to Raspberry Pi computers with four screws. Includes its own power cable compatible with standard and mini FPC connector formats. Another novel feature is that it integrates the display controller PCB into the case itself, which helps to offer a slimmer form factor.
The screen is compatible with all existing Raspberry Pi single board computers from model 1B+ onwards, up to the latest version 5, with the exception of the Pi Zero series which does not have the necessary DSI port. While there are many third party screens that can be used with these SBCs, these official screens are “fully compatible with Raspberry Pi OS”which means there is no need to search for drivers to enable touch screen input.
Note that the Raspberry Pi team recently released a major update to the operating system that, among other things, includes the virtual keyboard Squeekboard that should make it easier to use one of these touchscreen SBCs when not using a physical keyboard. If you use compatible hardware, such as official touch screens, Squeekboard It will automatically appear when the user taps the text input boxes and disappears when they tap elsewhere.
Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is now available in Selected retailers for a price of 60 dollars. The Foundation promises that both the second version and the original will be in production at least until 2030. A guarantee for clients who use them in integrated and industrial systems to incorporate them into their products and installations with more confidence.
