Reader: How do I get my recommended 7-9 hours of sleep?

Jannie: There are many things I have to do. Exercising, eating healthy, looking after my own and my children’s mental health – and now I also have to sleep 7 to 9 hours a day. For me, that knowledge has become just another stress factor, because I actually find it difficult to get that many hours. I am certainly tired enough when I go to bed and fall asleep quickly, but then I often wake up after a short time and can lie awake for hours. I can find lots of sleep advice online, but what works?

Bente Klarlund Pedersen: It is inherently a really bad idea if you lie down stressing that you can’t sleep. Stress in particular is a risk factor for insomnia. I have found the sleep advice proposed by the Knowledge Council for Prevention and the National Board of Health. So here comes a practical list first, try to follow it:
