Real Madrid have been a fierce opponent for Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League.
143 days after losing the Champions League final to the Spanish giants, the big German club suffered another bitter defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.
Dortmund led 2-0 away from home after the first half, but Real Madrid deservedly managed to turn the game around for a 5-2 victory. Vinicius Junior contributed to the comeback with a hat-trick.
Having lost away to France’s Lille in the last round, Carlo Ancelotti’s side avoided an even more difficult situation in their quest for a top-8 spot that gives them direct access to the round of 16.
With a win, Dortmund could have retained first place in the league, but the Germans are still far ahead in the 36-team league table.
When the teams met in the Champions League final on June 1, Dortmund didn’t know their visiting time, but after all, you can’t blame the Germans for that on Tuesday night. Real Madrid were simply better and applied such heavy pressure that the hard-fought Germans eventually had to capitulate.
Right from the start, Real Madrid settled into the match, and it was illogical that the visitors took the lead after half an hour. Here, the Dutchman Donyell Malen put the finishing touches on a well-executed attack with many combinations around Real Madrid’s field.
The white-clad fans at the Bernabeu were only really shocked when the Germans made it 2-0 a few minutes later on another counter-attack.
Malen centered the ball and in front of goal Jamie Bynoe-Gittens threw his body forward to put Dortmund in front by two.
Both Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham then hit the crossbar within seconds of each other before a spirited first half ended with a scoreline that did not reflect the game at all.
After a lot of play and chances, Antonio Rüdiger managed to reduce the score to 1-2 with a powerful header after an hour of play. Just a minute later, an exuberant Vinicius Junior equalized with a sure goal into an empty net.
The heavy and persistent Real Madrid pressure continued, and in the 83rd minute, not even a well-played Gregor Kobel could prevent Lucas Vázquez from putting the home team in front.
Three minutes later, Vinicius Junior increased the score with a sublime solo goal. He drove the ball all the way from the edge of his own field to the edge of Dortmund’s field before slamming the ball into the goal.
In added time, he put an end to it with another fantastic solo goal against a maddened litter of defenders.
