Apple Intelligence can now be used in Germany, but only on Macs. The release for iPhones and iPads will follow in mid-2025.
The first functions of Apple Intelligence are now also available on Macs in Germany. These AI-based features are part of the latest macOS Sequoia 15.1 update and can be used when the system language is set to US English. Full localization and additional features will follow in the coming months.
Apple Intelligence offers a range of AI-powered applications, including improved writing tools, email organization, expanded Siri features, and improved image recognition in the Photos app. Mac users will benefit from exciting innovations that will be gradually expanded over the coming months. According to a recent Apple press release The first functions can already be used.
Availability for iPhones and iPads
While Apple Intelligence is already available on Macs, iPhone and iPad users in the EU will have to wait until April 2025. The reason for this is legal uncertainties in connection with the Digital Markets Act, which require Apple to make specific adjustments for the European market. From April 2025, the functions will be released with iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 and offered in German. It is then no longer necessary to change the device language.
Apple emphasizes that the use of the new AI functions will only be possible on the latest devices. The iPhone 15 Pro (Max), all models of the iPhone 16 series as well as all iPads and Macs with an M1 processor or newer are compatible.
The new functions at a glance
Apple Intelligence brings with it a variety of functions that are intended to simplify everyday life for users. This includes improved writing tools that not only make it easier to formulate and retext emails, but also to automatically summarize messages, for example from group chats. Siri is also receiving a comprehensive update, which means the voice assistant can now respond to requests much more flexibly. For example, Siri also recognizes follow-up questions and can better interpret incomplete or garbled sentences.
In addition, the new photos app allows intelligent image recognition, with which users can easily search for content in their images or remove distracting elements. Another highlight is the integration of audio transcriptions in the notes and phone app, which can automatically convert spoken content into text. These and other functions will be continuously expanded over the coming months.
Legal hurdles in the EU
The delay in the EU release is due to the Digital Markets Act, which sets strict requirements for large technology companies in terms of data protection and market rules. Macs are not considered gatekeepers here, which is why the AI functions can already be used there. On iPhones and iPads, however, Apple had to make specific adjustments that should be completed by spring 2025. These measures will then enable a comprehensive rollout of Apple Intelligence functions in the European Union.
