Renault “gave” Slovenians an electric Twingo, it will cost around 20,000 euros

In Novi Mesto, this week representatives of the Slovenian government and the French company Renault (Renault) signed a memorandum of understanding that will be the basis for the production of a renewed version of the electric Twingo.

Production should start in 2026, and 150,000 vehicles should be produced annually.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Prime Minister Robert Golob, Vice President for Renault Herbert Steiner and President of the Revoz Management Board Jože Bela at a ceremony in the premises of the factory that has been producing Renault vehicles since 1973.

The signed memorandum will enable the maintenance of car production in Novi Mesto, where 1,400 people are currently employed.

According to the memorandum, Reno can count on the support of the state when investing in starting the production of the new model. The government recognized this investment as strategic and expressed its strong will to support the production of electric cars in Revoz.

However, it is not yet known with how many funds and under what conditions, the negotiations started a year and a half ago, when the future of Revoz was very uncertain, Prime Minister Golob said.

At the end of last year, Renault presented the concept of the new electric model Twingo. It is about the electric model Twingo E-tech, which, according to Herbert Steiner from Reno, is the answer to decarbonization, the issue of air quality, affordable electric mobility and last but not least, the re-industrialization of Europe.

According to the CEO of Revoz, the new electric model directly meets the needs of the European car market. The small city car will reportedly be available to buyers for 20,000 euros. As POP TV unofficially learns, Renault should invest at least half a billion euros in the launch of the new line, and the investment will bring 800 new jobs.

This would make it the largest foreign direct investment in Slovenia so far. Matjaž Čemažar, director of the company Domel, which produces electric motors, told Radio Slovenia that Renault made the right decision by choosing Revoz because Slovenia invests a lot in new technologies and development.

Let’s go mission

“Slovenian manufacturers in the auto industry are strong, development-oriented and connected to the Gremo mission, which we focused on the transition to new electromobility technologies,” emphasizes Čemažar.

Mission Gremo (Green mobility) is the strategy of the Slovenian automotive industry in cooperation with science and the state, which determines the development of the domestic automotive industry and mobility until 2030. It mainly foresees the transition from the production of parts and systems for internal combustion engines to the production of parts and technologies for electric and electrified vehicles.
