BRUSSELS – Climate think-tank Ember published its report on the production of electricity in the world for the first half of 2024, and it shows that in the European Union, renewable energy sources produced more electricity than fossil fuels.
According to the report, renewable energy sources (solar and wind power plants) produced 30 percent, while fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal) fell to 27 percent of electricity for the first six months of 2024.
Countries where renewables have taken over from fossil fuels for the first time are Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Belgium, while nine EU members have achieved this feat in the past few years. These are Sweden, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Denmark, Lithuania, Finland, Portugal and Austria.
Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Malta, Ireland, Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Romania and Cyprus are still waiting for the transition, while Greece is relatively close to renewable energy sources, having “overtaken” fossil fuels. SEEbiz
