The enactment of the ‘Partial Amendment to the Occupational Safety and Health Act’ is being promoted, which aims to strengthen the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s management supervision of delivery logistics companies such as Coupang and require operators to install cooling and heating facilities.
The main point of the revised bill, proposed by Representative Moon Jin-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea (Cheonan City, South Chungcheong Province, Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee), is to legally regulate the scope of cooling and heating facilities in order to improve the poor working environment in delivery and logistics businesses.
According to Rep. Moon Jin-seok’s office on the 24th, the deaths of workers at courier and logistics businesses such as Coupang have continued recently. However, it has been pointed out that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the responsible ministry, is only conducting formal investigations based on worker interviews, and that the state is neglecting the deaths and poor conditions of workers.
In addition, according to a survey conducted early this year, 80% of Coupang workers responded that they had experienced severe heat or cold, but in the case of Coupang, cooling and heating facilities were inadequate, with only one air conditioner installed in a 1,000 pyeong camp. It is the situation.
Representative Moon Jin-seok said, “The ‘Coupang Management and Supervision Strengthening Act’ is a bill that establishes a system to create an advanced working environment.” He added, “I hope that it will be supported by the active management and supervision of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the responsible ministry, and the active efforts of companies.”
