Report: Floods will cost 400 billion

The bill for not investing in extra climate protection in the next several years will be towering – and higher than what it costs to protect coasts and houses against the ravages of water.

This is the conclusion of a new report from DTU, which Berlingske has read.

Here, researchers led by climate economist Kirsten Halsnæs estimate that there will be climate damage after cloudbursts and storm surges of almost 400 billion current kroner over the next 100 years if we just let it stand.

If, on the other hand, we invest around DKK 130 billion in climate protection, we can avoid most of the damage.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke (S) says that there is a large analysis underway, which will result in, among other things, a national risk mapping.

And he promises that the government has in mind how the preventive measures are to be financed.

– Together with the defence, this is one of the things we have a very strong focus on when we organize Denmark’s long-term economic policy.

– We have to take into account the reality that the climate brings us. We have not prioritized it enough at all, and we have to do so in the future, he says to Berlingske.
