Residents of Sinuiju area ‘uneasy’ due to early fall parachute training

Rodong Sinmun, the organ of the North Korean Workers’ Party, reported on March 16 that Chairman Kim Jong-un guided the training after receiving a report on the training plan of the aerial combat units (our airborne units) the previous day (the 15th). As the Sinuiju Aviation Club began fall parachute training about 10 days earlier than usual, the local community in the Sinuiju area is in an uproar. Some voices say that it is closely related to the internal and external actions of the authorities, who defined inter-Korean relations as a ‘hostile relationship between two countries’ and recently declared a complete severance of land routes.

On the 21st, a source from Daily NK in North Pyongan Province said, “Sinuiju Aviation Club began parachute training on the 13th. Normally, training was conducted when the rice fields were cleared after the rice harvest, but this year, the training period was moved forward compared to previous years.” He said.

As a result, the shortcut from downtown Sinuiju to Toseong-ri is blocked, causing inconvenience to residents.

It is said that this training is being conducted in accordance with the ‘Rapid Response Training Code’. According to sources, the training program includes ▲strengthening rapid infiltration and ground control capabilities using civil aircraft, ▲familiarization of resident control and response procedures in emergency road blocking situations, and ▲assessment of the ability to conduct civil defense operations integrating air and ground.

A source said, “Residents are saying that the fact that this year’s training is faster than previous years does not seem to be unrelated to the recent situation,” adding, “Residents are feeling more complicated than ever as they continue to hear the loud sound of helicopters overhead and watch parachutes falling from the sky. “It is showing,” he said.

In fact, North Korea has recently been concentrating on instilling hostility among residents by claiming that a drone sent from South Korea infiltrated the skies over Pyongyang and distributed anti-North Korea leaflets.

In addition, as an extension of this, they reported on the bombing of the inter-Korean connecting road, which meant a complete severance of relations, and said, “This is an unpredictable war border due to the demands of the Constitution of the Republic, which regulates the Republic of Korea as a thoroughly hostile country, and the severe political and military provocations of hostile forces.” He also stated, “This is an inevitable and legal measure that arises from the serious security environment that is heading towards crisis.”

Sources say that residents are expressing anxiety as they watch premature parachute training taking place amid heightened tensions between North and South Korea.

A source said, “People are saying that the earlier training period, combined with the extreme rumors about war that are circulating in the market, are making a fuss, but they are worried that they are really trying to go to war, so they are in a distraught mood.”

While residents are expressing doubts that the parachute training at Sinuiju Aviation Club, which started unusually early, has a meaning beyond regular training, some are raising tensions and uniting internally to calm public sentiment shaken by economic hardship and floods. There is also an analysis that this is an intentional move by the North Korean authorities to do just that.

A source said, “There are some people who say it’s just a show to keep the country from thinking about anything else.”
