Domestic. The secret plan to remove Fredrik Reinfeldt as chairman of the Swedish Football Association is now beginning to crystallize. It will be Simon Åström who gets to lead the fight, reveals The soccer channel.
There will be a battle for the chairmanship of the Swedish Football Association. Politician Fredrik Reinfeldt, who has been chairman since 2023, now faces competition from Simon Åström, chairman of Swedish Elite Football.
According to information to the Football Channel, Åström has agreed to run and will be formally nominated on Friday.
Several elite clubs and districts are behind Åström’s candidacy, and among others Hammarby is said to have taken the initiative to replace Reinfeldt. According to information, Åström has support from 14 districts and a large number of clubs on both the women’s and men’s side, which is estimated at around 60 percent of the votes.
Fredrik Reinfeldt, former prime minister, has announced that he is standing for re-election – but the support for his leadership in football has been strongly questioned by several actors. It remains to be seen whether the election committee chooses to nominate Åström, which could lead to Reinfeldt withdrawing his candidacy, or whether it will be an open fight until the annual meeting on March 22.
Nominations for the post of chairman can be submitted until 15 January, and the nomination committee’s proposal will be published on 15 February.
