Results of a blind comparison of photo quality on Fold smartphones

Hello.

When we started making this comparison, I had absolutely no expectations of what would come out. Last year, Huawei Mate X3 turned out to be the best in a blind test, but a lot has changed over the year, new models have appeared, and Samsung also released Fold6 with an updated camera. In a word, the stereotype of perception suggested that the new cameras should prove themselves. The more interesting is what happened. And such a newcomer as Tecno V Phantom 2 was extremely interesting from the point of view of progress; I did not expect much from this model. What happened in comparison makes us reject many stereotypes.

Let me remind you that all pictures were taken in automatic mode, portrait shots were also taken by default (x1, no other modes were used). This is how you rated the pictures.

Photo #1. Flower on the table.

The light at the airport was not the best, it gave an offset white balance, and at the same time flickered. We could turn a blind eye to this, but since we are comparing four cameras, why not? Huawei is in the lead here by a huge margin (47%), followed by Tecno (28%), the two remaining devices scored approximately the same number of points (12%).

Picture No. 2. Hotel room.

Here the models have swapped places, Honor V3 is in first place (41%), Huawei is second (29%), Tecno (19%) and Samsung (18%) are very close.

Picture No. 3. Curtains and sun.

Huawei is in the lead by a huge margin (49%), Phantom is in second place (19%), Fold6 is close (18%), and the outsider is Honor.

Picture No. 4. Flower on a tree.

For the first time, Tecno is in first place (31%), followed by Samsung (30%) and very close to Huawei (29%), while catching up with Honor, it lags far behind these three.

Photo #5. Salad.

The clear leader is Huawei (60%), V3 is second (21%), Fold6 is third (15%), but Tecno received almost no votes.

Photo #6. Scarecrow on the wall.

The situation is repeated in the previous photo: the undisputed leader is Huawei, then V3 and Fold6, although the difference between the three remaining devices is not so great.

Photo #7. Map.

The first is Huawei (54%), then comes Honor (27%), the third is Tecno (13%), the outsider is Samsung.

Photo #8. House in the mountains.

It seems that we have a pair of winners who are going more or less evenly, ahead of Huawei (48%), then Honor (32%), third place goes to Fold6 (11%), but fourth place to Tecno (7%).

Photo #9. Road in a mountain village.

Exactly the same distribution of seats – Huawei, Honor, Samsung, Tecno.

Photo #10. River at Rosa Khutor.

Here Samsung takes second place (28%), first goes to Huawei (30%), third goes to V3 (25%). The outsider is Tecno.

Picture No. 11. Night river.

Once again we see the Huawei/Honor pair (46 and 39%), followed by Tecno (7%), Samsung (5%).

Photo No. 12. Restaurant lighting.

Exactly the same distribution as in the previous picture: Huawei/Honor (44 and 34%), followed by Tecno (14%), Samsung (4%).

Photo No. 13. Girl in a bandana (portrait).

It seems that the tastes of those choosing clearly put the same devices ahead – Huawei/Honor (40 and 31%), followed by Tecno (15%), Samsung (11%).

Photo No. 14. Girl on the stand (portrait).

Here Samsung is in third place (19%), Huawei is first (40%), Honor is second (31%).

Photo #15. Guy with glasses (portrait).

Honor is first (51%), Huawei is second (29%), Fold6 is third (13%).

Photo No. 16. Cup of coffee.

And again, Huawei is first (51%), Fold6 is second (23%), Tecno is third (13%).

Let’s look at the devices from the point of view of ratings and make a final table.

Samsung Z Fold6 Honor Magic V3 Huawei Mate X3 Tecno V Phantom 2
Number of first places 0 2 13 1
Number of second places 3 9 2 2
Number of third places 8 2 1 6
Number of fourth places 5 3 0 7

The undisputed leader in shooting quality based on the results of this comparison is the Huawei Mate X3. Despite the fact that this model is almost a year old, it offers excellent image quality and provides a huge advantage in comparison with its direct competitors. Huawei was able to do a lot for this (and this year’s Pura series shoots even better, whatever one may say, the company is great for achieving this).

Second place goes to Huawei’s former relative, Honor. There are differences, but here we have a confident second place, there is no doubt about it.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 has a completely disappointing result; compared to these devices, it offers the worst quality (it is better than the same iPhone, but definitely loses to the best models on the market). And yes, it takes third place, but Tecno V Phantom 2 is very close to it. What is a deafening failure for Samsung is a definite achievement for Tecno. You also need to take into account the difference in the cost of models, the fact that Tecno is just beginning its journey in high-quality camera modules and progress year by year is already clearly noticeable. I really hope that Samsung will wake up from their competition with the iPhone, which they undoubtedly win, but at the same time lose to Chinese manufacturers.

These are the blind test results we received. And soon we will launch a comparison of the quality of flagships, including the iPhone 16 Pro. Interesting discoveries await us there too.
