Animated films have seen many great robot characters over the years, from the Iron Giant to WALL-E. Now the wild robot Roz marches to continue the group.

Animation hits Lilo & Stitch (2002), This is how you train your dragon (How to Train Your Dragon2010) and Croodit (The Croods2013) all Chris Sanders tried directing a “real” movie in 2020 At the call of the wilderness (The Call of the Wild). Harrison Ford’s and the half-digitally realized dog’s adventure did not work as efficiently as hoped, but resulted in noticeable losses for Disney. Sanders returned to DreamWorks to continue dabbling in animation.

The director’s latest film A wild robot (The Wild Robot2024) is based on by Peter Brown to the children’s book of the same name, which has been a success around the world, but it has not been translated into Finnish even in the wake of the film version.

Both the book and the film adaptation tell the story of Rozzum 7134, or Rozi, who is shipwrecked on a remote island in a storm. The service robot created for the modern world is literally right in the yard in the wild nature and quickly earns the wrath of the forest dwellers with its activities.

Due to a tragic accident, Roz ends up being the guardian of an orphaned gosling. The robot’s functional deficit is filled when the tirpanrääpäle has to be taught to fly with the rest of the flock before the first snow falls. Of course, the task is not easy, especially when almost the entire community looks down on the strange couple and only the scheming fox Fink offers help.

Looks good

Made in the spirit of the Ugly Duckling, Villi roboti is a rather formulaic cackling that advocates acceptance of self and difference. Of course, these are extremely important topics, but an adult’s interest threatens to falter at the film’s very traditional plot twists.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of good stuff even when the story isn’t interesting.

The wild robot is a real treat in terms of its visual appearance. Especially the scenes where Roz gets to know her new home forest are enchantingly beautiful. The color scheme and lighting have been done to perfection, and every frame of Villi robot would be suitable as a wall frame or as an illustration in a book.

Chris Sanders’ film looks like a painting in motion and it’s definitely worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. Theaters still exist for movies like this.

Head to head

Wild Robot isn’t nearly as much of a restless ADHD cannonball as, say, indifferent Mischief itself 4 (Despicable Me 42024). I don’t think that child viewers will share my view, but the film could have spared a little more flash. Now I have the feeling that the creators haven’t trusted the script enough to allow it more backwaters. Many of the jokes would have worked better if they hadn’t been shoved in the middle of all the rambling.

The age limit for wild robots in Finland is K7. Violence and anxiety are listed as the reasons.

The movie doesn’t contain any really scary scenes, but it’s even more exciting. At the very beginning, a loud and threatening storm hits you in the face. Several scenes of the film, which is quite dark in places, take place in a dark forest and many of the characters behave in an emphasized threatening manner. The fox is strangled and the grunt also gets hit in the head with a cone.

Death is present in the film in different ways, and towards the end we also get a big fight scene with explosions.

Everything in Wild Robot is done in a fairytale-like, suitably softened way, but as a father myself, I wouldn’t take a five-year-old child to the theater, even if the film’s age limit allows it. Wild Robot is best suited for those who have already started school, and for the most sensitive children, it can be quite smart to wait for the viewing in the safety of the sofa at home or at least take hearing protection with you to the theater.

Star Wars star as a bear

Wild Robot is not new in terms of its story or main character The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant1999) this WALL-E (2008), but still a clearly more successful animated adventure with sci-fi elements than average. It offers a visually impressive experience that even adults can easily enjoy, and the story isn’t exactly on the sweet side either.

Out of the family films of the current year, Villi roboti is just a wedge on my list Inside Out 2.

Villi robotti will be distributed in both Finnish and English. The review is based on the original, which stars a very famous group of Hollywood cream. There is Rozi performing Lupita Nyong’on in addition, for example Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry and Ving Rhames.

Star Wars star who once lent his voice to Joker Mark Hamill can now growl like a grumpy grizzly bear.

In the Finnish version, the voice actors are Heljä Heikkinen, Paavo Kerosuo, Riku Leskinen, Toivo Luoma, Jarmo Koski, Mirjami Heikkinen. Riitta Havukainen, Robin Svartström, Markus Bäckman, Sam Huber, Lucas Timperi, Viivi Helisalo, Kuura Rossi and Vilppu Uusitalo.

“The wild robot enchants the viewer with its visual appearance, not so much with its story.”
