“We must do everything necessary so that Ukraine has what it needs in terms of training, supplies (..) so that it can prevail in the fight,” Rite emphasized at the meeting of the Ukrainian contact group at the US military base in Ramstein.
He stated that Ukraine should be put in the best possible position so that it could start peace talks with Russia and end the war on its own initiative.
Rite warned that if the talks do not lead to a good outcome, it will be a sign to China, North Korea and Iran that they can benefit from Russia’s victory in Ukraine.
He added that the fight is not only about Ukraine, but also affects the geopolitical context.
Rite initially did not comment on newly elected US President Donald Trump’s demand for other NATO members to increase their defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP).
He only emphasized that support for Ukraine also requires sharing the common burden.
