The Rizhsky railway station building is being prepared for sale. Preliminary approval of the deal will be discussed at the board of directors of JSC Russian Railways on September 27, reports “Interfax”.

The station building was under reconstruction all last year.

Nothing more is known about the deal. Perhaps the recently renovated station will become part of “RZD-City” in the future – a full-fledged city within a metropolis, which is going to be built on the site of the Riga freight yard.

A couple of years ago, when this project was being discussed, Russian Railways stated that “in order to create a unified architectural concept for the redevelopment of the territory, a concept for the restoration and adaptation of the cultural heritage site to modern use will be developed.”

It is unlikely that anyone would think of demolishing this architectural masterpiece. The station building in pseudo-Russian style was built in 1897-1901 by the architect Stanislav Brzhozovsky as part of the construction of the Moscow-Vindava railway line.

The result was a beautiful station-terem, abundantly decorated with high kokoshniks, decorative friezes, and intricate moldings. Three two-story terems at the level of the first floor are connected by covered arched passages with a front porch in the center.

Rizhsky railway station has been a favorite of filmmakers since Soviet times. Scenes from the films “Station for Two”, “Seventeen Moments of Spring”, “We Are from Jazz” and many others were filmed here.

The station building was under reconstruction the entire previous year. The tracks were being reconstructed to launch MCD-4, and two new 270-meter-long platforms appeared.

Since September 1, 14 electric trains have been arriving and departing from the Moscow-Rizhskaya station on weekdays, and 16 on weekends. There was information about opening long-distance train service, but apparently this will remain in the plans.
