The attack happened immediately after the trucks passed through the Kerem Shalom checkpoint, which is under Israeli authority. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA), described the situation as “impossible to manage” due to the “total collapse of civil order” in Gaza.
“Until four or five months ago, we still had local personnel to escort the convoys. Now, everything is gone. Local gangs and families are at war with each other to get their hands on any business or activity in the south,” Lazzarini explained.
The situation became so desperate that hundreds of starving people tried to storm a UNRWA center in Khan Younis, believing that aid was there. “But the convoys had already been looted and there was absolutely nothing left to take from the warehouses,” the UN official added.
Gaza’s interior ministry, led by Hamas, claims its security forces have killed “more than 20 gang members involved in truck theft” in an operation carried out in conjunction with local tribal leaders.
This situation comes at a critical time, when some two million people in Gaza depend on humanitarian aid for survival. The UN has already warned that there is a “strong likelihood” that famine will hit areas in the northern Gaza Strip.
