The Patriots group confirms that they do not want the general as their vice president. In the meantime, he continues to provoke on social media. But for Salvini’s League, it is a political disaster
A general “feels like a virus, but the virus spreads and is contagious. So I will play the role of the virus.” The MEP of the League, Roberto Vannacci he thus answers reporters about how a general feels when he is caught in a sanitary cordon and he does it by showing all his teeth in a grin of defiance and pride. But the virus has been isolated. It was the Patriots of Europe themselves who did it. Rejected in his role as vice-president of the group at the Bureau meeting. At the meeting, they voted against his nomination, which took place by acclamation on July 8 and was contested by the Rassemblement national, by all delegations except the Italian one. The only one to support him is the head of the League delegation, Paul Borchianow under fire for not having politically avoided the sensational accident.
Coming back from a difficult day, he stares at his cell phone, chews a piece of gum while also cashing in on the election of Ursula von der Leyencontested by the League and the Patriots. The news of his group’s step back on his role as vice president does not help. His ideas are not in line with the new profile that Rassemblement National is trying to give itself in view of the upcoming French presidential elections: too homophobic, too racist. After all, the le Pen-Bardella duo had already sidelined the Alternative für Deutschland (Afd, the main far-right party in Germany) in order to gain space and be credible.
Vannacci nervously answers the Rete4 cameras in the evening: first the denial and then the step aside. “Well, let’s say that there is a discussion underway and the Patriots still have to crystallize. I spoke with Bardella, everything is in the process of becoming. However, this possible novelty would not change the importance of the League, which is the third force of the group. For me there could also be other roles”.
The “Vannacci problem” was raised by the French delegation. “Homophobic, racist, pro-Mussolini: here is Bardella’s super vice-president in the European Parliament”, was the headline in Libération that introduced the writer-general to the French public. The president of the Patriots Bardella, a child prodigy of Rn, on June 2 had rejected the “homophobic” statements of the then candidate on the Lega lists: the leading man of Rn had explained that he was “not aware” of such statements. “I do not agree with them, I condemn them”, added Marine Le Pen’s dolphin. “I do not know Vannacci personally but from what I have read he has made statements that do not correspond to the values of the Rassemblement National. To be clear, I think this gentleman will not be vice-president. It seems impossible to me”, he added Laurent Jacobellia member of Le Pen’s party, in an interview with La Stampa. And also another big name from Rassemblement National, Jean-Philippe Tanguybluntly stated that the Lepenists “oppose” the election of the general as vice-president of the new European Patriots group.
A solid wall raised by the party that is the majority shareholder of the group with 30 deputies. The second delegation is the 11 Hungarians of Fidesz, the party of Prime Minister Orbán, and the third is the League with 8 deputies.
The general continues on his path, plays with the Decima on social media and says that he will “never abandon my convictions. With my ideas I have achieved success and I also bring them to Europe”. And in fact he was the most voted deputy in Italy behind Giorgia Meloni. But in Europe out of 720 MEPs he returns to being one of the many. In the meantime, the League neither denies nor confirms. “We will fix everything”, they say.
