LG’s latest display technology developments may look like elegant furniture, but the appearance is deceiving: they are displays intended for future cars, which were presented by the Korean developer in such a stylized form that cannot be linked to any brand.
A fascinating idea is the plastic organic LED (P-OLED) monitor, which rolls up inside the dashboard when not in use. The technology is the same as that used by today’s biggest hits: foldable smartphones. The serial (i.e. third generation) experimental development of the LG Gamma is a 14.2-inch, trapezoidal display, but it is easy to see that the size and shape can be varied at will – it’s just a matter of space, style and money, what car manufacturers use – and that where, since such a display can be perfect, for example, as a movie screen that can be lowered from the windshield frame, which can be used by passengers of fully self-driving cars.
Then there is the display integrated into the steering wheel, or rather, the steering wheel designed around the curved OLED touch screen, which during active driving could include the operating functions that are currently divided into two separate screens (multimedia touch screen and instrument panel) in a single piece of hardware, and in self-driving mode it could even serve as a controller.
The third idea is the transparent OLED display, the advantages of which do not even need to be glossed over: such a monitor can even be integrated into the windshield, side windows or sunroof.
Finally, LG also demonstrated a nice user interface function: their artificial intelligence-based personal assistant can connect various on-board functions, such as driver vigilance monitoring, as well as online shopping and payment functions, so if it senses that we are tired, at the next restaurant he orders us a coffee, which we can pay for via the touch screen.
