The Ministry of National Defense “welcomes the notification to the US Congress sent on Monday, October 7, by the State Department regarding Romania’s acquisition of AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel radar systems, through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) security assistance program” .

The procurement program includes a number of up to four AN/MPQ-64 F1 radars, including logistical support, training services, communications equipment, technical assistance and transport services, to equip the ground-based air defense battalions of the Land Forces Romanians.

The radars will contribute to improving airspace surveillance, especially against the latest threats represented by unmanned aerial vehicles, with low travel speeds and reduced radar footprints, MApN also announces. For the purchase of the first two radars, the financing instruments offered by the US Government through the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program will be used, which will allow contracting in the shortest possible time after signing the Letter of Offer and Acceptance agreement. This Agreement is to be offered to the Ministry of National Defense by the US Government in the coming weeks, added MApN.

“The latest generation radars of the Sentinel type will complement Romania’s air defense capabilities, especially in terms of the early detection of unmanned aerial vehicles, which evolve at low travel speeds and have reduced radar footprints, threats that manifest themselves in the proximity of the borders national, in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine”, said Minister Angel Tîlvăr.

According to MApN, the AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel represents the latest configuration of the Sentinel radar family and is a three-dimensional radar – it can measure the distance, direction and elevation of manned and unmanned aerial objects, data that it automatically reports to command and control systems. control of air defense with the ground base (Ground Base Air Defense/GBAD) with a short range of action.

This radar system supports multiple command and control interfaces, providing consistent aerial surveillance and fire control data for GBAD systems. It can detect, identify and track unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.

The value notified to the US Congress by the State Department related to a program specific to the Foreign Military Sales Congress process is determined by the US Government based on internal procedures and may exceed the actual value of the acquisition, established by the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) type agreement.

In the case of the AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel radar acquisition program by Romania, the US Congress was notified with a value of approximately 90 million dollars, MApN stated.
