Romania has started massively importing energy in recent days, at record prices. The highest price was recorded on Thursday, November 14, reaching 328 euros per Megawatt-hour, which makes it the most expensive in the European Union.

Also on Thursday, another negative record was recorded: at 20:55, Romania imported over 2900 Megawatt-hours, close to the maximum limit of 3500. These costs will be reflected in next year’s bills, but especially in the increase in taxes , experts warn, report tvrinfo.ro.

According to the information provided by Transelectrica, the import of electricity on the evening of November 14 was made at an instantaneous power of 2,915 Megawatts, at 19:55. At that time, power production stood at 5,200 megawatts, while consumption was close to 8,200 megawatts.

We have been importing significantly over 2000 megawatts every hour for 4 days now.

Due to the absence of sunlight and wind, wind turbines and photovoltaic panels generate only a very small amount of energy. Romania is trying to compensate for this situation by increasing the production of energy based on coal and hydrocarbons.

Peak consumption is expected to occur during the winter, reaching between 9000 and 9500 megawatts. Currently, imports are significant and at record prices.

On Thursday, November 14, in Romania and Bulgaria, the price of one Megawatt-hour reached 328 euros, being the highest in the European Union.

Since the price of energy is capped until April 1, 2025, Romanians will not feel, at least for the moment, the rate increases.

A possible solution would be to reduce consumption or increase production capacities.
