There is mourning in Romanian sport. A former champion, winner of the Olympic gold medal 60 years ago, died the other day, announced on Monday, Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee.
Mihaela Peneș shone from the first edition of the Games she participated in and won the gold, at the 1964 Tokyo Games. She was only 17 years old.
She threw the javelin beyond the 60m line and became Romania’s youngest Olympic champion at the time. He entered Romania’s Olympic history by winning everyone’s hearts with common sense and honesty.
The surprising victory at the 1964 Olympic Games was followed by the gold at the 1965 Universiade. He then competed at the 1968 edition of the Olympic Games in Ciudad de Mexico, where he would win the silver medal.
In the period 1965-1968, Mihaela Peneş was national champion in javelin. He would end his sports career after the 1968 Olympic Games and dedicate himself to the profession of coach, then he was an official of the Romanian federation.
From 1990 she joined the Romanian Olympic Committee, and in 1995 she would become the coordinator of the Committee’s International Department, and later, general secretary for a few months in 1999.
Later, Mihaela Peneș retired from public life, choosing to live her last years in complete discretion.
