At the Faculty of Economics and Engineering Management of the University of Economics and Business in Novi Sad, a round table entitled “European sustainable values in agriculture and the accession process” (Chapter 11) was held, which was opened by the provincial secretary for higher education and scientific research, prof. Dr. Branko Markoski. It was pointed out that this chapter is of exceptional importance for Serbia in the process of European integration, as it implies harmonization with the legislation of the European Union, improvement of standards in agriculture and environmental protection, as well as improvement of the quality of life in rural areas.
During the round table, Markoski emphasized that Serbia must follow European standards. However, as he pointed out, Serbia is simultaneously developing a model of sustainable agriculture adapted to the specific natural, climatic and economic conditions of the country. According to him, farmers are not only the economic basis but also the guardians of tradition, identity and quality of local food. The application of European values in agriculture includes the preservation of natural resources, investment in ecological technologies and education of farmers for competitiveness in the modern market. The goal is to increase economic sustainability, reduce dependence on imports and strengthen local production.
What did the round table cover?
The project “Jean Monet module – European sustainable values in the common agricultural policy” is implemented through the Erasmus+ program. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability in agriculture. The module includes shorter teaching programs dedicated to understanding the EU model of agriculture and Serbia’s obligations arising from the negotiations on Chapter 11 – Agriculture and Rural Development. Also, it is a continuation of the previous modules of the University of Privredna Academy on European integration and the application of EU values in the candidate countries.
The project runs from 2022 to 2025, with funding from the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). During the duration of the project, six specialist courses, seminars, student debates, research projects and final round tables are organized every year. This initiative contributes to the development of awareness of the importance of European values in agriculture and strengthens Serbia on the way to membership in the European Union, while strengthening environmental responsibility and economic stability through sustainable agriculture.
