The law that allows drivers to pay the wreckage after the trip took effect this year. The normative act also brings a series of changes regarding the calculation of road tax for trucks.
Romanian law imposes a road tax for all vehicles traveling on a national, European, express or motorway road.
Instead, it does not apply to those who use local or county roads. This tax differs depending on the type of vehicle and its destination.
How much is the fine for those who do not pay the road tax on time
The law establishes that the owner of a car that drives without a valid license plate risks being fined.
The penalty is between 250 and 500 lei, but it can also reach 4,500 lei, for heavy trucks.
Finding the lack of road tax is done with the help of cameras belonging to the Road Company (CNAIR). They photograph the car’s registration number and check in the database if a toll has been paid for it.
According to the law, drivers receive only one fine for the lack of a driver’s license, from the moment it was caught by the CNAIR cameras and until the violation is brought to their attention.
Rovinieta no longer has to be paid before making the trip
This year, a new law came into force, which allows the payment of the damage after the trip has been completed.
Law 275/2024 allows drivers who travel by car to pay the road tax until midnight the next day. However, this measure will only apply from 2026.
Which means that, currently, drivers are still required to get their insurance before they hit the road. But, although this obligation exists, CNAIR allows those who have not paid the toll to pay it until midnight.
„If the driver buys his ticket on the day he was recorded by the CNAIR cameras as having driven on a road where payment of this tax is mandatory, he will not be penalized. It is a waiver made for those bona fide drivers who may have neglected to collect their wreckage. Or maybe they had nowhere to buy it on their way. So, if you drove without a ticket, but pay the road tax on the same day, you will not be fined”, the spokesperson of CNAIR, Alin Șerbănescu, explained to ProMotor.
The new normative act, which will apply from 2026, provides that the derogation will be valid only in the case of vehicles up to 3.5 tons.
In addition, the road tax will be calculated according to the category of the car, its pollution class and the duration of use of public roads.
For heavy vehicles, a new concept, TollRo, will be introduced. Thus, heavy vehicles will pay a toll by multiplying the number of kilometers traveled by the TollRo unit value.
