Patrick Wiencek has worn the jersey of the handball Bundesliga team THW Kiel since 2012. The former national player’s time with the Zebras will probably end in the summer.
As “Bild” reports, Wiencek’s expiring contract with THW Kiel will not be extended. Accordingly, those responsible had to decide between Wiencek and Hendrik Pekeler, whose working paper is also only dated until the end of the season.
For the coming season, the Norwegian Petter Overby (contract until 2026), newcomer Veron Nacinovic and Pekeler will probably form the trio at the circle.
A look at the current season makes the decision against Wiencek more understandable. The 35-year-old has been on the pitch for 155 minutes in ten HBL games so far. Pekeler is the first cyclist to reach 480 minutes. Overby has played 284 minutes.
“We are still in discussions with Patrick”
THW managing director Viktor Szilagyi has already revealed to the tabloid that from a sporting perspective they are probably planning without Wiencek for the coming season.
“We are still in discussions with Patrick. We are talking to him about a possible role and perspective at THW Kiel. Ideally, you will find one that suits both sides,” he indicated that they would like the player even after his active career wants to stay in the club.
Wiencek moved from VfL Gummersbach to THW Kiel in 2012. With the Zebras, the Duisburg native won six German championships, won the DHB Cup four times and was crowned Champions League winner in 2020.
Wiencek extended his contract with THW Kiel for the last time in October 2022. “I would like to end my career here at some point and by then I would like to use my performance to repay the trust that THW Kiel has placed in me since 2012,” he said at the time.
Wiencek ended his career with the national team in spring 2022.
