Temperature and humidity must be managed appropriately… Beware of fire accidents

(Sejong = Newsis) Reporter Lim Ha-eun = On the 25th, the Rural Development Administration emphasized thorough growth management as strawberry growth may be slow this winter due to the lack of sunlight and cold.
Strawberries grown in facility greenhouses are not properly fertilized if harvesting temperatures are low and lack of sunlight continues, resulting in increased occurrence of deformed fruits.
In a humid environment, the calyx dries out or the tip burns, and the activity of fertilizing bees decreases.
It is best to check the number of bees in the morning on a clear day and repurchase the hive if the number of bees is less than 2 in 5 minutes.
When it is difficult to find honey bees, rear young bees are introduced, but caution must be taken in December and January when there are few flowers in the greenhouse, as deformed fruits may occur if the density of rear young bees is too high.
The temperature and humidity of the greenhouse environment must be maintained appropriately to prevent calyces from drying out or burning. The temperature of the facility is managed to be below 30 degrees during the day and above 5 degrees at night, and the humidity is maintained at 50 to 60% during the day and 90 to 100% at night by operating ventilation and flow fans.
When ventilating, be careful not to change the temperature suddenly. Heating in the morning is more efficient in raising temperature and lowering humidity. On cloudy days, adjust the amount of water to prevent the roots from becoming too wet. In the long term, it is better to increase the amount of sunlight by using functional reinforcement film.
Strawberries are prone to gray mold disease and flower mold disease in the shady side of the greenhouse when the temperature is low and humid.
If a disease occurs, remove diseased leaves or fruits immediately and apply enough pesticide to control the plant. Preventive control is carried out when wet environments are expected before and after rain. Chemicals are used in accordance with safe use standards by referring to the Pesticide Safety Information System (www.psis.rda.go.kr).
In addition, since greenhouses are vulnerable to fire, we must prepare more carefully for fire accidents caused by using heaters in winter. Inspect electrical facilities such as heaters and cooking utensils, and provide fire extinguishers in advance.
“Last year, strawberry production decreased due to low temperatures and insufficient sunlight,” said Moon Ji-hye, head of the Vegetable Basics Division at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration. “As low temperatures are expected in winter this year as well, we will work hard to produce marketable fruits by thoroughly preparing for the lack of sunlight and cold.” “Please give it to me,” he asked.
