Russia does not rule out the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on its western borders in response to the deployment of American long-range missiles on German territory, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday, according to EFE.
“If the representatives of the German federal government consider it justified to trigger an escalation under the pretext that something is happening in this region, we will react with compensatory measures in the way we consider most appropriate,” Riabkov said. “I don’t rule out any option,” he added, answering a journalist’s question about the possibility of Russia deploying nuclear weapons on its western borders.
Washington and Berlin announced last week that they would begin deploying long-range US missiles to German soil in 2026, including SM-6 missiles, Tomahawks and hypersonic weapons under development.
This deployment, condemned by Moscow as a “very serious threat” to Russia’s national security, is seen as a temporary solution until Europe has its own long-range missiles ready.
According to Russian Deputy Minister Ryabkov, taking into account the total capabilities of NATO countries, Russia must “calibrate” its responses, and “this is not a threat to anyone. It is the way to find the most effective reaction algorithm to the changing threats, including from the point of view of costs”.
On the other hand, he reaffirmed, according to the TASS agency, that “Russia regularly expresses its fears about biological military activities carried out with the participation and direct assistance of the US military agency in laboratories near the Russian border, very far from American territory “. Therefore, Ryabkov stated, Moscow proposed initiatives to consolidate and institutionalize the regime of the Convention on the Prohibition of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons (BTWC), “including the establishment of bio-medical teams and anti-epidemic groups”.
The former secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev, previously claimed that the United States has established a network of laboratories around Russia that conduct biological-military experiments, especially with genetic materials of Slavic populations, and a Russian parliamentary committee presented in mid-April a report on the activity of some American biological laboratories in Ukraine.
