The Japanese government today published an official protest against Russia’s decision to permanently ban thirteen Japanese citizens from entering the country.
The ban applies mainly to leading representatives of important companies and companies, including the head of the Toyota car company. According to the media, this is retaliation for the sanctions that Tokyo imposed on Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.
According to the AP, Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said the ban “restricts the legitimate activities of Japanese companies (in Russia) and is completely unacceptable.”
Hayashi was responding to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s announcement on Tuesday that Russia is permanently banning 13 Japanese nationals from entering the country, including Toyota Motor CEO Akio Toyoda, Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani and Japan International Cooperation Agency President Akihiko Tanaka.
Russia did not provide any justification for the selection of persons to whom the entry ban applies. Japan is working closely with the G7 group of seven developed nations to impose sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine.
Japan has already faced a number of retaliatory measures from Russia, including the suspension of bilateral peace treaty talks with Tokyo that included negotiations over the disputed islands. Moscow also announced an entry ban on hundreds of Japanese government officials, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and some of his predecessors.
