Russia has slapped Google with a fine that is physically impossible to pay –

What makes the verdict very funny is that there is (literally) no such amount of money in the world.

Google has been in constant legal battles with Russia’s policymakers for the past four years. It all started when YouTube blocked the ultra-nationalist Russian channel Tsargrad in 2020. After the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, further bans followed, including the state TV channel Zvezda.

Among other things, the Russian court demands that Google restore the blocked content. Of course, the point would be the fine.

A The Register according to his report, the court demands nearly 20 quintillion dollars (33 zeros after the 2) from Google in favor of Russian media companies. According to the decision, the company would have to pay more money than there is in the world. The World Bank estimates that the current global GDP is about $100,000 billion, so it would cover only a tiny fraction of the Russians’ claim.

It’s all a bit funny, especially since Alphabet, Google’s parent company, isn’t overly worried. In its most recent report, it stated that it believed these legal actions would not have significantly negative effects.
